Ashley's Angels Tribute Fund

Thank you for your interest in supporting Ashley's Angels Tribute Fund. The funds raised from this initiative will go directly to SickKids Hospital Liver Transplant Research specifically focused at optimizing the outcomes of pediatric liver transplant recipients nationally and internationally. Ashley was a very healthy 2 year old when she suddenly became yellow (jaundiced). We brought her to SicKKids, and after a number of tests, Ashley was diagnosed with Pediatric Acute Liver Failure (PALF), a rare and frequently fatal diagnosis in children. The availability and utilization of urgent liver transplantation has greatly improved outcomes for children with PALF. As Ashley's condition deteriorated rapidly in front of our eyes, we became so aware of how long wait times for available (and appropriate) deceased donor organs in our country can be. Fortunately, liver transplantation with a living related donor organ is an option in Toronto, and Ashley's Aunt was determined to be a candidate to donate a portion of her liver for Ashley to undergo her life-saving liver transplant - before it was too late. Because of this precious gift of life, Ashley is now a thriving 6 year old girl who amazes us each and every day. With long-term survival after pediatric transplantation now the rule rather than the exception, patients, their families and health care providers face new challenges beyond patient survival rates. Better understanding of the long-term medical considerations is of critical importance in children who have received a transplant, because by nature of their young age, children are face a greater cumulative burden of life-long immunosuppression. Anyone familiar with the world class treatment provided at SickKids will quickly discover that sustaining such quality of care benefits greatly form additional funding and support.
