Lisa's Walk/Run for SUDEP Aware
Lisa Montanera was an active and energetic twenty-five year old. She was a second year dental student at the University of Toronto and a treasured member of her family and large circle of friends. On the night of January 18, 2012, Lisa went to sleep and never woke up. The cause of her death was SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy). The cause of this terrible complication of epilepsy is unknown. Lisa had been diagnosed with epilepsy just two years prior to her passing. She took her medication, and her seizures all but disappeared. Her epilepsy seemed little more than an inconvenience. 1 in 100 people have recurrent seizures, and 1 in 1000 people with epilepsy will die from SUDEP each year. SUDEP can even affect people like Lisa, with well controlled epilepsy who otherwise live full, normal lives. To honour her memory, Lisa’s family, friends and classmates will take part in the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Walk/Run on October 14. We hope you will support much needed research into solving the tragedy of SUDEP. Funds raised will support the research of Dr. Elizabeth Donner at Sick Kids (a world authority on SUDEP) through the organization she co-founded - SUDEP Aware (www.sudepaware.org). With your help, researchers will gain new insights into what causes SUDEP, and ultimately find an effective prevention. Please consider joining our event and/or sponsoring us in Lisa’s memory.
